This book pays attention to the history of the research into non-verbal communication, its functions and the different kinds of non-verbal behavior. In addition, it describes the role of non-verbal behavior in stereotyping, self-fulfilling prophecies, convincingness, deception and psychical and bodily complaints.

This book describes how people together design their reality in a self-evident way. They do so by frequently repeating themselves in a disciplined way and displaying behavior complementary to that of the other. This casts a new light on how persons and situations are related to each other. This way of looking at things turns out to be closely connected to the French suggestion psychology of the era before the Second World War.

Schabracq, M.J. (1987). Betrokkenheid en onderlinge gelijkheid in sociale interacties. (Dutch Dissertation, English summary, 159 pages) Amsterdam: UvA.
Report of a some studies about the relation between interactors’ similarity in postures (postural congruence), movements (mirroring) and behavioral timing (interaction synchrony) on the one hand and the mutual involvement of the interaction partners at the other. It turned out that interaction partners show most similarity when the conversation starts, doesn’t run smoothly and ends. In those cases, they pay more attention to each other to attune to each other and less to the spoken content.
